Welcome to episode three, part two of Project 47, my YouTube series where I’m riding through all 47 prefectures of Japan on my trusty motorcycle! In this thrilling chapter of my Kumamoto adventure, I tackle the dramatic roads of Mount Aso, chase waterfalls, and unwind with a unique izakaya experience in Kumamoto City. Buckle up for day two of five in this vibrant prefecture, and dive into the full episode embedded below to join the ride!
Sunrise Start and Volcanic Ventures
Day two kicks off at 5 a.m. at my Kumamoto campsite, where I wake to a rare dry tent and a great night’s sleep. With clouds looming but spirits high, I pack up and head straight for Mount Aso, Japan’s largest active volcano. The ride up is pure magic—empty roads winding through a surreal, scarred landscape shaped by past eruptions. Though the crater itself was closed due to gas venting, the chilly air and ominous vibe only added to the adventure. A quick stop at a local shrine and a glimpse of horses grazing against epic mountain backdrops set the tone for an unforgettable day.
Waterfalls and Scenic Wonders
Kumamoto’s natural beauty shines in this episode. Nabataki Waterfall, nestled in a cave formed by ancient magma flows, is a jaw-dropping highlight. The roar of the falls and the serene setting made it hard to leave. Kikuchi Gorge, with its emerald waters and tranquil trails, offered a peaceful escape after hours of riding. Both spots were perfect for soaking in the prefecture’s raw, unspoiled charm, though a looming rain forecast pushed me toward Kumamoto City for the night.
A Rider’s Dream: Aso’s Skyline Roads
The roads around Mount Aso are a motorcyclist’s paradise. From serpentine paths carving through tortured volcanic terrain to the Kuchi Aso Skyline—a name that promises and delivers epic riding—these routes had me in heaven. Sweeping corners, dramatic vistas, and a symmetrical mini-volcano fresh from a controlled burn kept my adrenaline pumping. Waving to fellow riders under a clearing blue sky added a sense of camaraderie to the journey. The GB 350S handled it all like a champ, even if it’s no McLaren!
Izakaya Nights in Kumamoto City
After a day of non-stop riding, I rolled into Kumamoto City, dodging rain to check into a hotel near the historic castle (stay tuned for day three’s visit!). Hungry and ready to unwind, I stumbled upon a gem of an izakaya specializing in Kumamoto’s famous horse meat. From raw horse meat with salt and sauce to a horse meat pizza that blew my mind, the meal was a highlight. The friendly staff and cozy vibe made it even better—after three booked-out spots, this place welcomed me with open arms. If you’re in Kumamoto, check it out!
