Project 47 Episode #1: Embarking on an Epic Motorcycle Adventure Through Kagoshima

Welcome to the launch of Project 47, my YouTube series where I set out to ride through all 47 prefectures of Japan on my trusty motorcycle! In this thrilling first episode, I kick things off in Kagoshima, the southernmost prefecture of Japan’s main islands, known for its dramatic landscapes, vibrant culture, and active volcanoes. Buckle up as I take you along for the ride, and don’t forget to check out the full video embedded below for the ultimate experience!

A Journey Through Kagoshima’s Stunning Landscapes

The adventure begins as I cross into Kagoshima, greeted by sweeping coastal views and the promise of an unforgettable six-day ride. My route traces the coastline from the border with Miyazaki, loops around the iconic Kagoshima Bay (often called the “lobster claw” for its unique shape), and winds through lush mountains and charming villages. From white-sanded beaches to hairpin turns in the highlands, every mile is packed with breathtaking scenery and hidden gems.

One of the first stops is a serene waterfall tucked away in a small Japanese village. At its entrance, I stumbled upon a fascinating local tradition: parents hang children’s bibs at a shrine to pray for their health and prosperity—a practice unique to Kagoshima. The sight of colorful bibs fluttering in the breeze added a touch of cultural magic to the journey.

Chasing Waterfalls and Volcanoes

Kagoshima is a land of natural wonders, and this episode is packed with them. From the majestic Ogawa Falls, nestled in a lush valley, to the iconic Cape Sata (Sata Misaki), the southernmost tip of Kyushu offering a 360-degree panoramic vista, every stop is a feast for the senses. I also couldn’t resist a detour to Ryumon Falls, a stunning cascade that provided a perfect break after a long day on the road.

The star of the show, though, is Sakurajima, Kagoshima’s active volcano. Mid-ride, it erupted, spewing ash into the sky and forcing me to adjust my plans. But that’s the beauty of motorcycle travel—embracing the unexpected! Watching Sakurajima from across the bay, its serene beauty juxtaposed with its raw power, was a highlight I’ll never forget.

Cultural Stops and Local Flavors

Beyond the natural beauty, Kagoshima offered rich cultural experiences. I visited Sugahara Shrine, a picturesque island shrine, and explored the Chiran Peace Museum, a poignant tribute to the 1,036 pilots who lost their lives during World War II. The museum, built on the site of a former airfield, houses artifacts like the iconic Zero fighter plane and serves as a powerful reminder of history’s impact on this region.

No trip is complete without indulging in local cuisine. From a steaming bowl of curry to a mouthwatering miso chashu ramen (only 670 yen!), every meal fueled the adventure. My night at a lively izakaya in Satsumasendai was a quintessential Japanese experience—great food, cold beer, and warm conversations with locals. Motorcycle Haven: Triumph Kagoshima and More

As a motorcycle enthusiast, a stop at Kagoshima Triumph was a must. I got to check out the Tiger 900 Rally Pro and the 400X Scrambler—both beasts that had me dreaming of upgrades for future rides. The owner, Kadomatsu-san, was a blast to hang out with, sharing his passion for bikes and making the visit a highlight of the trip.

The roads themselves were a rider’s dream. From leisurely coastal cruises to adrenaline-pumping mountain passes, Kagoshima’s diverse terrain kept me grinning ear to ear. Even a minor mishap—bending my brake lever in a low-speed tumble—couldn’t dampen the fun. (Pro tip: always check your gear before setting up camp!)

Camping Under the Stars

Camping added a raw, immersive element to the journey. From pitching my tent by Lake Ikada with its golden torii gates to waking up to a misty sunrise near Nagashima, each campsite offered a unique backdrop. The weather wasn’t always kind—gusty 60km/h winds and a soaked tent tested my resolve—but the views and sense of freedom made it all worthwhile. One morning, I even had to repack my tent after locking my keys inside (oops!), proving that every adventure comes with its share of laughs.
